What is Friar Laurence thinking?

Read Act 4, scene 5, lines 1-64. The family discovers Juliet 'dead'.
You won't understand half the words but I think you can figure out their reaction to finding her dead in bed the morning of the wedding.
Now Friar Laurence shows up (with musicians!).
He says:
"Now heaven hath all, and all the better it is for the maid." (She's in a better place.)
"And weep ye now, seeing she is advanced?" (why are you crying if she's in heaven?)
"She's not well married that lives married long." (a long marriage makes you unhappy, anyway)
"Yet nature's tears are reason's merriment." (if you are sensible you'll be happy for her)

My question is: what is the Friar thinking as he says these things. Put yourself inside the mind of the Friar. Remember that he knows things he isn't saying. In quotes (i.e. use quotation marks at the beginning and end) tell me what the Friar is thinking as he speaks to the grieving family.

  2. He is trying to calm down who ever is crying telling him/her to be happy because she is in heaven a better place. He is telling him/her that long marriages make him/her unhappy so be happy because she is not going to be married andthat if she loves her then she should be happy not sad.

  3. everybpdy is crying and mopping that juleit is dead...i thnk the friar is thinking that he needs to persuade these people that juliet is really dead. and maybe he feels bad for lying to the lady capulet that her daughter is dead. he's saying to himslef "why am i lying to these people that there kid is dead".

  6. When the friar is talking to Juliet's family and Paris, he is talkiing as if the family should just deal with it because she wouldn't have been happy marrying Paris anyway. He is basically telling the family that they should at least be happy because now she's in a better place and she can be happy without marrying Paris.

  16. Friar is making it all up. He knows about the plan so he speaks like everything is all ok.
He's not positive its all ok though becasue something might go wrong, but he know's the complete situation so he's not saddended and comforts those that think this is real.

  18. I think what Friar was trying to say that Juliet's family shouldn't grieve over her "death" they should be more happy that she's now in the better place, in heaven. And ifthey cared for her, then they would be happy for her then.

  19. "I gotta make your parents just let you rest in piece. I got to make sure that they think your dead. Gotta make them just go to the funeral, leave, and let Romeo take her away."

  20. "Okay, now I have to make sure people think she's dead. Okay Juliet I hope you don't wake up now and wake up later when no people are around except Romeo."

  21. the friar is probably thinking
" i hope this works. did it work? what if i gave her the wrong drug? is she really dead, or is she sleeping? did romeo get my letter? is he coming tonite when she wakes up?"
he was probably asking many questions.

  22. I think he is saying, "It's okay, she is resting know. After crying so much for tybalt's death, she's finally getting a break."

  23. I think Friar Lauarance is thinking," I know this may seem wrong to do to a family but, she we'll be much better and feel better with Romeo. I hope she doesn't wake up, or are plan we'll be ruined. Poor Juliet having to choose her husband over family but, it's better for her to go with her heart than weep in sorrow."

  24. " All is going well. Juliet and Romeo will be together soon, and if i can help the family cope with juliet's 'DEATH' then everything will work out. The only thing left to worry about is the plans to go accordingly."

  25. "What he is thinking is that his plaaned worked and that all he can say to them is sont owrry be happy she is in a better place becuase if he doesnt they probably would think somthing so he has to saty calm"

  26. frair is a very sensieble nice man. he had to say that to make her look dead and he acually said that because she is going to be happy later on and he doesnt want the family to suffer for a fake death. then when he says that you should be happy for her he means that shes going to have a better life with romeo.

  27. I think that he is trying to say that Juliet has choosen the the death over the unhappy marriage. He also try to say that to make Juliet parent feel that they have kill thei own daughter because of this unwanted marriage. Why you guys are crying? Youn guys kill her in a way

  28. What he is trying to say is "Don't worry about her. The marrige wouldn't have worked for her anyways. If you only knew how she was feeling, you'd understand."

  29. Friar is thinking this as he talks to the grieving family...
"I hope that I did not make things worse, I hope that when Juliet wakes up that Romeo will be here and that he got my message and knows what is going on."

  30. he know that it is all fake and he know that the drug work so he keep pretending all of these things. he try to be as innocent as posible so no one would look strange about this thing

  31. i think the friar is trying to make them not worry, because he knows that juliet is not really dead. And i think he also doesnt want to get caught for what they're doing.

  32. "Juilet is going to be really happy."
"She is going to be suprised how many people are crying for her"
"She is going to be happy with Romeo"
"She is going to be thankful I did this for her"

  33. " i think he is thinking that she is just asleep and she will wake up later on"

  34. i think that the frair id thinking that he is guilty and he knows what is wrong and wants to keep it a sercet and want jueilt to tell her parents and not let the parents find out into she wakes up and says that is a micrcle i think well that is all i got to say.

  35. What i think that the Frair is thinking is how he is very much involed. Also I'd know that in the back of my head that I'm telling lies to these people. What I'm doing saying is that I would not like to be Frair's position.

    ReplyDelete
  36. the friar is lying to juliet's parents to make it seem shes dead but shes not. The parents will think shes dead then Romeo will come and get her.

    ReplyDelete
  37. what is happening is that the frier tell juliets family and paris about what happened to juliet and how she died.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If I were Friar Laurence I would be thinking "It's all your fault that your daughter went to extreme to not get married to Paris. All she wanted was her husband that she really loved. Now that she's 'dead' she'll be happy because she'll be in 'heaven' with Romeo."

  39. basically life goes on and there's no coming back so move on
