Separation

Juliet and Romeo are apart but both know of the Prince's sentence, that Romeo is to depart the city forthwith never to return. I'd like you to read two passages:
Act 3, scene 2, lines 97-127 and;
Act 3, scene 3, lines 29-51.
You will read first Juliet's reaction, then Romeo's. Compare the two. Is either person more unselfish? Does one seem more sincere than the other? Does one seem more griefstricken than the others? Write a short paragraph of, perhaps, 50-75 words commenting on the two lovers and their feelings about the impending separation.

  1. Juliet's reaction was a suprised shock, then she started hating Romeo since he killed Tybalt but stopped hating Romeo and started hating Tybalt since Tybalt could have killed her husband. Romeo's reaction was quite cocky and suprised that he was banished not killed but he was sad since he cannot visit Juliet that often now.

  2. I think Romeo was being more selfish about his banishment, but he had more of a reason because he was the one getting banished. Juliet was just talking about how horrible it was that he was banished and how she was still a virign. There seems to be more anger in Romeo's reaction than Juliets reaction.

  3. Romeo and Juliet are both saddened by the outcome of what happened but, Julit seems more upset about her husband then her own cousin who just died. Romeo is more concerened about himself and the word "banished." Juliet is trying to see the positive side of things but, there is none her husband is banished, cousin killed, and no one to turn to except the nasty nurse.

  4. Juliet's first reaction is that Romeo kills her cousin. But she is happy that Romeo is alive but sad that he is banish from the city.
Romeo's first reaction is that he can't see Juliet any more because he is banish from the city. All he think about is can not be with Juliet and being separate apart.

  5. in act 3 scene 2, i think that Juliet is upset at first that Tybalt was dead, but she is even more upset that Romeo was banished.in act 3 scene 3, Romeo is upset that he is banished because he wont get to see Juliet. i think that they are both equally griefstricken.

  6. It seems like Romeo is saying that he isn't worthy for Juliet and what he has also what good things he has had in the "heaven" that he speaks of. Juliet speaks of all the bad things that are happening to her or "grief-stricken". They both seem to be speaking of their misfortune is different ways

  7. Juliet seems more griefstricken then Romeo. She seems to care alot about him. She is only thinking of him and can not bear it. Romeo is thinking a lot about himself here. I think he is more selfish than her. He still wants her to be happy. Romeo thinks that the Prince could have done better than just Banish him.

  8. Juliet seems to be concerned about Romeo and his banishment from the city of Verona and realizes that Tybalt is a villian. Romeo is more concerned about his banishment then Juliet. He talks about how being exiled is just like death.

  9. In my opinion, I believe that Romeo was being a little selfish, Juliet was not really. Romeo was being a kid and whining about it. He should have been more mature and took the punishment, he should have been expecting it. The punishment was considered lucky, he could have been chosen to be killed.

  10. It seems like out of the two of them, Romeo is the more selfless one. He said he would rather die and be in heaven, where he could still see Juliet, than be banished where he can't see her at all. Juliet was more feeling sorry for herself. She was saying that even if Tybalt had killed Romeo, Romeo would be dead and Tybalt would be banished. So either way she had it bad. Romeo was concerned more that he wouldn't ever be able to see Juliet again. He was feeling bad for himself too, but I think he was still more selfless than Juliet.

  11. i didnt get much about the two reactions of romeo and juliet but i definitely think that juliet worries a bit more about herseft than worrying about romeo. every reaction that Romeo gives out is about juliet and their relation. she thinks more about who is going to be her husband more than who she really loves so, i guess juliet is more selfish.

  12. Romeo is more selfish. He doesn't want to be banished. who would? but i mean if it was banishment or death i'd gladly flee from that city. I think juliet is more grief striken, and sad than selfish. Eventhough i think she is being a little hot and cold in the situation. She hates him then she loves him. All of that beside, i think it is sweet that romeo is so worried about the seperation.

  13. I don’t think that Juliet is selfish with her thoughts. She is sad that he cousin is gone but at the same time if he wouldn’t be then Romeo her husband would have been dead and she would have been even sadder. But Romeo is being very selfish because he killed someone and the prince could have sentenced him for death but instead he banished him which in his case is better.

  14. i think that the reaction of juliet was she is more on romeo side than at her cousin. for romeo i think he is being a like a little punk

  15. Juliet is happy that Romeo is alive, but moarning because he is banished. Romeo is even more griefstriken than Juliet. His only thoughts were about not seeing Juliet. It seems like Romeo is more selfish because his only thoughts were about Juliet, not caring about anything else. Juliet, even though she values Romeo more, she still sad about Tybalt.

  16. I personally thought that romeo was being an ass. He alwaysed talked in third person which made him look and sound like a jerk. He was to full of himself throughout the scenes. Juliet was good in her thinking because she was thinking of others before herself, mainly romeo. In My opinion Juliet was the better person and at least tryed to keep her cool while she wasnt full of herself unlike romeo.

  17. I think Romeo is selfish because once he is banished, he cries and says that he might never see Juliet again. On the other hand, Juliet says that Romeo is her husband and she will not say bad things about him. She says that if Tybalt were to live, then he would have killed Romeo.

  18. I believe that in Romeo's reaction, he was being stupid. I think he was stupid because he was only talking about himself instead of talking about Juliet. Juliet on the other hand spoke about Romeo and how she was worried about him rather than herself. She was kind and selfless as Romeo himself was being selfish.

  19. i think that juliet is selfish because she cares more about having sex with romeo than her cousins death. romeo is being sincere for trying to become friends with juliets family. really i think that they really dont they loved each other i think they thought that they were attracted to each other. i think thats all they thought of each other.

  20. i think that romeo is being selfish because at least juliet was being on his side and i also think that juliet was being selfish because at least he is on her side that is what i think on both of there sides.

  21. I think Juliet is being selfish on her part, she doesn't care about her cousin who just died only, Romeo. And on Romeo part, he was dealing with his exiled from killing Juliet's cousins and I guess he's worried about that.

  22. i feel they both have a share of selfishness while juliet has no concern over her cousins death instead romeo, yet he's not worried bout her but himself
